British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called a UK General Election for 4th July 2024.
For UK expatriates, participating in the UK general election is a crucial way to remain engaged with their home country's democratic process.
REGISTERING TO VOTE IN THE UK GENERAL ELECTION
Already registered or need to renew?
To renew your registration or update your name, address or nationality, contact the Electoral Registration Office that confirmed you are registered as an overseas voter.
Eligibility Check
Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. You can register to vote if you are a British citizen who has been registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years. If you were too young to register when you left the UK, your parent or guardian must have been registered.
Gather Necessary Documents
Have your National Insurance number and UK passport details ready. If you don't have a passport, other identification forms may be acceptable.
Online Registration
Visit the UK Government's voter registration website (gov.uk/register-to-vote). The process typically takes about 5 minutes.
Confirmation
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email or letter. Ensure your details are up-to-date, particularly your overseas address.
How to cast your vote
In Person
While rare, if you happen to be in the UK on election day, you can vote in person at your local polling station.
Postal Vote
Apply for a postal vote through the same online portal used for registration or via a postal form.
You will receive your ballot paper by mail. Complete it according to the instructions and return it promptly to ensure it arrives before the election deadline.

Vote By Proxy
You can also vote by proxy, that is authorising someone else to vote on your behalf.
Your proxy must be registered to vote and willing to vote on your behalf at your designated polling station.
